STAFF GET EYES CHECKED BY CALLAN SERVICES
The Department of Personnel Management (DPM) prioritized staff health and wellness by participating in a free eye check-up initiative, conducted by Callan Services National Unit (CSNU), to commemorate World Sight Day.
The exercise saw DPM officers actively participate in vision screenings and an awareness session aimed at highlighting the critical importance of eye health and regular vision screening. World Sight Day, an annual global event, draws attention to preventable blindness and vision impairment. The 2025 theme, “Everyone Counts,” underscores that good vision is fundamental to improving education, employment, and overall quality of life.
“The health of our personnel is paramount to effective service delivery,” said Ms Taies Sansan Secretary for the Department of Personnel Management.
“By partnering with Callan Services, we are taking proactive steps to ensure our staff have the opportunity for early detection and intervention, aligning with the World Sight Day message that every person’s vision counts.”
CSNU, which provides essential disability services across Papua New Guinea, utilised the session to advocate for improved care, accessibility, and support for vulnerable people living with disabilities.
Recent health data indicates that over 80 per cent of vision impairment cases in Papua New Guinea are avoidable through early diagnosis and intervention.
However, access to eye care services remains a critical challenge, particularly in the country’s rural and remote areas.
The free screenings offered DPM staff direct access to qualified eye health professionals from CSNU, encouraging a proactive approach to maintaining their vision and understanding the necessity of early detection.
CSNU’s timely awareness drive serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for continuous outreach programs to ensure more Papua New Guineans have access to vital, preventative eye health services.
DPM extends its appreciation to Callan Services for their professional support and for bringing this crucial workplace wellness and health education program to its staff.
