SECRETARY’S MESSAGE: PINKTOBER
This October, as we join the rest of the world in commemorating Pinktober – Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wish to reaffirm the Department of Personnel Management’s (DPM) strong commitment to supporting awareness, education, and action in the fight against breast cancer.
Breast cancer remains one of the most common health challenges faced by women worldwide, and Papua New Guinea is no exception. Many of our mothers, sisters, daughters, colleagues, and friends have been affected — some silently, others courageously. It is therefore crucial that we continue to speak up, get checked, and encourage one another to take proactive measures for early detection and treatment.
Early detection saves lives. Regular health check-ups, breast self-examinations, and seeking medical advice at the first sign of change can make all the difference between recovery and loss. As public servants, we have the responsibility not only to serve our nation with integrity and commitment but also to lead by example in safeguarding our health and wellbeing.
A healthy workforce is the foundation of a productive and efficient public service. When our employees are informed, supported, and healthy, our institutions function better and deliver stronger outcomes for the people of Papua New Guinea.
Therefore, I encourage all departments and agencies to take part in Pinktober activities — wear pink, host awareness sessions, invite medical professionals to speak, or share educational materials within your workplaces.
Public service is about people — serving, supporting, and uplifting communities. By promoting breast cancer awareness, we demonstrate the compassion, care, and unity that define our profession. Let us stand together in breaking the stigma, spreading information, and ensuring that no woman feels alone in this fight.
To all our female officers, please make the time to get screened and encourage your peers to do the same. To our male officers, your support is equally important — as advocates, partners, and colleagues. Breast cancer awareness is everyone’s business, and your encouragement can help save a life.
This Pinktober, let us not only wear pink but live the message — through advocacy, empathy, and action. Together, we can build a healthier, more informed, and supportive Papua New Guinea where every woman has the chance to live a long and fulfilling life.
